Fundamental basics if you are to get the intended use from your computer. The modern computer is virtually unlimited in it's capabilities, ever waiting for new software to direct it in a new venture. And most computer users are inevitably attracted to new things they can do with their computer as they become aware of them. All computer functions and software programs are managed in a routine manner, and the basic routines change very little. Understanding the computer basics enables you to recognize these routines and leaves only the personal characteristics of any given software to further learning. These computer basics are devided into six categories . . . after you fully understand the mouse. Easy as A - B - C - 1 - 2 - 3 . . .
Note that through necessity, there is considerable reading to do. But you can make that easy too. You will have the option of downloading the ReadPlease 2000 quality text to speech program. And it is free. You will easily install it and be listening, or "reading along" in minutes.

Fully Understanding the Mouse
Fully understanding the mouse functions, using the "left" and "right" buttons. The mouse must be understood before proceeding to the real computer basics. If you have to ask "Is that a left or right click?", you will not comprehend much of the beginning basics. This is where you will begin. Then proceeding at your own pace to . . .
|
A
General Computer Terminology and common computer components, becoming comfortable with the generalities. Remove the common areas of misunderstanding, such as the difference between computer memory and harddrive space, often confused due to using the same sizing terminology. Learn the names and functions of the common computer components found on all modern computers.
|
B
Basics of Your Computer, computer selection, understanding enough about computers to be able to select what you want to buy. When relying strictly on outside advise, it is often difficult to determine that you are speaking with some one that honestly and factually knows how to advise you. Very simply, make sure you can tell when talking with some one about computers, that they actually do "know more than you do".
|
C
Computer Navigation, the missing knowledge link in the majority of computer users. With out this knowledge computer use will never be easy because virtually every thing you attempt to do with the computer assumes you have this knowledge. Yet, the average new computer user stumbles along, and never really learns "computer navigation". Microsoft exclaims "Where do you want to go today?" They then point you to the Windows 95/98 "Start" menu, then "Programs", and from there you are pretty much on your own. Even when using their tutorials it is obvious due to the lack of fundamental information, that it is assumed that you understand computer basics.

1
Data Manipulation, the entire contents of all computer data storage areas and devices consist of files and folders or data. Computer navigation must be used to find it Data manipulation is used to manage it. Identifying, then safely arranging, storing, moving, deleting, copying, pasting, any file, in any folder, on any drive.
Manipulating text and graphics from one Windows application to virtually any other application. Another of the most basic, yet most useful funcion of the Windows operating system, using the common "Edit" menu features such as "Copy, Cut, and Paste". These functions have been around since the "DOS" days through all versions of Windows, only improving with Windows 95/98, yet they are not commonly used by the average computer user. Most users appreciate word processors, e-mail and other programs, but don't learn much about the tools that will indeed make them valuable.
Information is included for data "Backups", what needs backing up and what doesn't? Different backup media, ranging from the antiquated diskette to tape backups, and removable drives such as the Iomega Zip and Jaz.

2
Installation Management, all hardware and all software must be installed. You should understand Plug and Play and manual hardware installation. And you should have a basic understanding of the emerging "USB" (Universal Serial Bus) devices, and the advantages they offer. You will continously be involved in "software installation". You should be aware of the several methods available both for "installing" and "uninstalling" software programs. You should have the ability to install any software to any drive or folder, creating new folders as needed, then configure "execution shortcuts" to the best advantage. If you follow "default" (factory settings) when you install all software, you will accumulate very long "Program" menu folders of mix and match software when you should have master category folders within the "Programs" folder with like software folders inside each master folder. It is logical that you also should have the ability to "uninstall" any software safely, and be able to recognize trivial software that could cause a crash or other problem.

Personal Options, such as setting the computer clock and calendar, setting screen colors and resolution to the best advantage, controlling "Desktop" colors, icons, shortcuts, backgrounds, and more, all amounting to full control. Assigning sounds to a multitude of functions, making Windows 95/98 boot according to several options. Setting Keyboard" options, learning to use the built in multimedia features such as "Sound Recorder", and the "Media Player" for playing many types of sound files and CD music. Using the Windows 95/98 "System Tools" for your harddrive maintenance. This section also contains continuing research development discoveries in undocumented areas.

That's it, a broad over view of Computer Basics, starting at the beginning for the new computer user and continuing through all the necessary basics needed if you are to have full control of your computer, and derive all the abilities it has to offer. It is true that this whole spectrum of learning is not necessary "just to use your computer". But most new computer users that originally thought they were only interested in a specific computer use . . . discover the newly presented possibilities. Most new users, by human nature, will attempt many new ventures, and few will back up and properly learn computer basics. This can only lead to future difficulty in learning . . . forever.
As in all serious learning efforts, there is a considerable amount of reading required. Would you like to just read a long with a "free", mouse controlled quality text reader, choosing from four voice fonts. Voices a little machine like, but a pleasant way to study.
